No. Just use tile mastic not thinset. Tile backer board is generally use on floor to level them and in wet applications. Basically during a renovation.

Any ideas, other than the backerboard? I have 9 foot ceilings, and don’t want my wall to fall onto the floor.

I tiled the backsplash behind our stove all the way to the ceiling. I used a travertine subway tile. I used mastic to adhere it to the wall, and a sanded grout after it dried. I did not use any backerboard of any kind. Our walls were standard drywall, and it has held up fine for several years so far.

Ditto above, 10 years for me. No backer board needed for backsplashes, even to the ceiling 👍🏻
