Depending on the amount of cobalt in the carpet you can put that on the wall to bring it out in the rug. Dark colors are in this year. Also would depend on the size of the room. Doing one wall in the dark color will make the room look larger, as well as bring out the cobolt in the carpet and then do a medium or light gray, also big this year, on the other walls.
A red or an orange accent would be beautiful
Here is a suggestion for a color palette if you choose the blue to pop. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/265923552971969542/ This one is a more bold and colorful palette https://www.pinterest.com/pin/275141858459683194/ and this one is more conservative yet rich combination. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AUzRHH3DgpG3bq1hVqhORz_D_MsbL0Ln5hs7-x4_3a0ugx43Fvn5dm4/. There are many more it just depends on your personal style. Good luck I hope this helps.
Robins egg blue!
Bringing in more cobalt blue sounds stunning!
Blue would work because it is already in the room. Orange complements blue so that would work too. Love the sound of all that gold and cream. Without the blue in the carpet you could go anywhere with color. I think I would try to invite some of the colors from surrounding rooms to come in to the living room - a little cross pollenation, if you will.
