We wanted to redo our living room for a while and we finally had some time to tackle our 1970s living room. We white washed the fireplace which really brightened up the space. From there, we decided to try and update the space by painting the paneling. We have always gone with a neutral greige color. This time we decided to go with Sweet Serenity which is a light sage color. We are very pleased with how this project turned out. Unfortunately, the room is still not completed. The trim and outlets need replaced as well as the carpet! This project was very affordable as we had left over white paint to do the fireplace. The only materials needed were primer and paint for the wall.
Before
We started by taping off to paint the fire place and got it ready to paint.
After
We then white washed it, the finished fireplace! It looks so much brighter, wow!
Then we put primer on the wood paneling before painting.
And here is the finished project!! Walls and fireplace have a whole new look.
And this is what the room looked like when we moved in. It was so dark and uninviting. It surely looks better now!
We also tackled the trim and door-painted white
And had new carpet installed! It’s been such a transformation!

I would try this project. I want to know why type of paneling do you have. Mine is a 1960's vinyl coated wood. Could I use the primer and then paint this type of paneling, do you think?
