Textured Walls- is there a way to get a more smooth look?

I have an old house with the old plaster walls. Other the years they put a spray texturing on them to cover the cracks in plaster. Question is: Is there an easy way to have a more smooth looking and filling walls without replacing with Sheetrock or trying sand them? Thank you for any answers you reply with.

It's time consuming, but sanding is probably the best (and cheapest) option. Try using either an orbital or mouse sander (you can get cordless ones for $30.00 or so). An orbital will make quick work out of the lumps, but a mouse will help you get into the corners. Belt sanders are more difficult to handle and may take off too much too quickly.
Texture may be a way they hid cracks in the plaster underneath.
I bought a bucket of drywall mud and thinned it out and rolled it on. You have to test your texture of mud to get the best consistency. I think I used a big fluffy roller. I tried this years ago. Just an idea. Good luck!
I had this problem in my basement...a contractor friend suggested I skim coat them with plaster skim coating. I did the bathroom and it worked great.
Texture was probably the way they hid the imperfections in the walls. Sand with an orbital sander or any small sander, but be prepared if there are cracks underneath.
Sounds like Robin and Jjs have 2 good ideas. Definitely better than sanding.

i feel your pain.the previous owner of my house did a very heavy texture as well....and the painted it in a hi gloss finish. i don't mind the color, but the walls look like they have pimples.
Hire a drywall taper to skim coat your walls. aside from paying for labor, the only material is some buckets of drywall compound. Depending on how many rooms/walls need to be done, it might cost you less in the long run. Good luck!
YODA ALERT: Many dangerous secrets textured walls can hide, young Master. Including multiple wallpaper layers, black mold, lead paint, and asbestos I have found them ALL!!! Your best plan: Let sleeping dogs lie. Sanding can create dust of lead OR asbestos. Asbestos must be removed by specialists trained and well-paid for the service. You and your family would have to move out of the house during the process. Much better, young Master, to take the compromise position. Hang 1/4" sheetrock over your existing walls just as they are. Your light switch boxes and electrical boxes will probably pull forward that far, and if not, Lowe's is your friend.
