If you cut hydrangeas down to the ground and they bloom on old wood, the following year you will not have any blooms at all. Make sure your hydrangea blooms on new wood if you try this.

Prune a hydrangea after it's blooms fade, but don't prune the dead sticks, because they have the blooms for next season.

After they bloom the Hydrangeas could be trimmed up if needed...and when dormant.......prune the dead canes out. (usually in the center.)
