Does anyone know why my Yucca Color Guard plants have drooping stems?

I bought 2 of these plants a couple of months ago from a reputable nursery. They were very striking! They are bright yellow and green stems that stand up stiffly almost giving the shape of a star. Now they are drooping. Was told by nursery maybe too much water or not enough water. These plants like full sun, very drought tolerant. I only water them once every couple of weeks and I make sure the water drains out completely from the container. Trying to give it more sun as it was getting maybe 4-5 hours a day but was told they might need more than that. Please help any advice?
The top first picture is how they looked for the first couple of months after I purchased them.

Your post doesn't show where you live but it's possible they aren't right for your growing zone???

These prefer to be planted directly in the ground where they should get the proper amount of water from whatever rain falls. They do appear to be pot bound from your pics.

You could take the pics back to the nursery for their opinion.

I agree with Robyn. The pictures seem to show them in their original pots, so I would re-pot them so the roots have room to grow to support the stems. I do not live in an area in which yucca would be native (New England) so I am really just basing my opinion on how some plants need a well developed root system to support the plant.

Because they want to be PLANTED and not stuck in pots!

I had Yuccas several years ago -- all planted in the ground and they thrived!

Plants in pots lose all the nutrition in the soil quickly, unlike in the ground because of the water that runs through them, in essence they may be nutritionally deficient. Use Miracle grow water soluble fertilizer in the lower dose so you can feed it more frequently. You should always repot plants into another pot when they are purchased as the soil may already be close to depleted by the time you get it and may be pretty root bound already.

Thanks; I will try the miracle grow and if they don't look any better in a week or so I will plant them in the ground in a very sunny location!

Don't water them too much, they like it on the dry side. Terri

They need to be planted in the ground or if you want them in pots the next size up with drainage holes and the proper soil

  • Yep, they need to be in the ground
