I myself would go a grey that goes with the grey carpet, white would be ok, but if you go with a grey, then you have your pick of any accent color that exists. I would make sure to put a little bit of black to bring together the furniture, but go with something bright. With the black furniture I don't know if I would want to incorporate the dark blue from the adjoining room, that may be too much dark color for the family room. Red would be a good accent for the gray and black.
Your room sounds neutral enough to handle any color that you like. You can use some blue to cross pollinate there is probably a blue that will coordinate with whatever color you choose.
How about a pastel color, beige, melon, sand, pale green, pale yellow. You should pick a paint that gives contrast to the furniture and the carpet. Grey carpet with any color is fine and so is the. black furniture. If your grey is dark grey you want a light color, if it light, make sure you have contrast. All your colors will blend nicely with the paint. Stop by Homedepot or Lowe's paint department, and check out the many colors they have , and take samples. I recommend Glidden. Ask if you need a primer. Don't get primer mixed with paint, get it separately.
I love the idea of a steel blue
I like steel blue, not sure if I can handle that much blue.
Thank you.
