If there is already a finish on it, a light sanding to provide some tooth to the surface will help whatever you choose to paint it stick a bit better. Sand and wipe down with a clean cloth. Then you should be able to paint away to your heart's content. I usually lightly sand in-between coats, but check the directions on your paint.

  • I agree with Roxaneg , sand lightly and wipe down. If the piece is very dark and you want to paint it very light or white, you might have to do a primer coat or an extra paint layer.

A light sanding should be all the prep it needs. You may want to prime it before painting, but if it's in great condition prep is really simple

The old buffet has been painted yellow. I'm thinking about painting it a cherry wood color. Thanks for your reply. Pam

Do it over with fine sandpaper first to rough up the surface and clean off any grease and old sealing paint. Dust off. Then paint.

What color is the piece now and what color do you want to paint it. Lightly sand and clean. Use primer you can add the color in your primer then paint. Enjoy
