I love adding plaid to my autumn and winter decor, but I decided to mix things up by using a plaid stencil instead of fabric! Click HERE for the FULL tutorial and DIY details!
Have you ever seen wooden cafeteria trays before? I hadn't but couldn't resist snapping these two up when I found them at the thrift store. They just seemed ideal for upcycling- like blank canvases ready to be repurposed!
I wanted to give the trays a more rustic look, so I sanded off most of the blonde finish so that I could re-stain them. It didn't turn out QUITE as rustic as I had hoped, but it was good enough for what I was going for!
Then I used a specialty stencil (Get the details about it on my blog!) to give it that quintessential buffalo check plaid look with red and black paint! I actually goofed up when I first started stenciling it...but my mistake turned out to be a fortuitous one (more info on my blog HERE!)
When all was said and done, I had a fun, cabin-style tray! And that stencil made plaid painting an absolute BREEZE. I sealed it with clear top coat...and now I can use it in my fall decor.
I can use it as a tray, or as a wall hanging, or just on top of my mantel. Happy autumn!
