Coastal Pumpkins

I saw a Pinterest pumpkin decorated for Halloween and thought I can do that but with a coastal flair and leave it out all year long! It's relatively easy and lots of fun to make long-lasting pumpkins so here goes....

The one thing I didn't get a picture of was the plastic and styrofoam pumpkins I purchased at the dollar store. Get white if you can. I didn't and I had to paint them white (an additional step). First, get some tissues or napkins with a pattern you like. I chose this orange and teal shell pattern and it was a package of purse sized tissues.
Next, separate the backing sheet from the pattered sheet. What you end up with is like thin tissue paper.
I cut up the paper into smaller sized that would adhere to the pumpkin without lots of wrinkles or overlap.
I mixed Elmer's with a few drops of water to thin the glue. I also stuck a toothpick in the top of the pumpkin to help me hold it while I painted about half the pumpkin with glue. Then I took the pieces of tissue and laid them on and smoothed them out with the paint brush (and my fingers). Then painted the rest and repeated with more tissue. I painted over them with a shinny Mod Podge to seal.
The pumpkin came with a little stalk at the top but I took it off and inserted a shell for the coastal stalk. This pumpkin happened to be made of styrofoam so it was easy to exchange. The plastic ones, I cut a small hole with an x-acto blade and glued in the shell.
Turned out kinda cute. After this one, I bought real tissue paper and made about 15 of these little cuties and displayed them in a large clam shell by my front door. Next time, I'll coordinate the colors a little better so they all go together.
My coastal Halloween display.

did the tissue paper have designs or Did you place plain tissue paper on the pumpkins first and then put the napkins over the top?

Where did you happen to find all those pretty coastal patterns? I can't ever come across any! They all look very pretty. You did a great job. Happy New Year
