They make pretty great faux 3d tiles that have adhesive so you just peel and stick. They come in everything from tile to stone to brick. They are easily removed but also adhere very well. I hope you follow up and show what you end up doing!

Use a vinyl (scrubbable) wallpaper. There are so many cool patterns out there which would make a fantastic backsplash. I'm planning to do this in the new home I'm building.

Depending on your style, beaded board is super easy to apply. If you don't have a style that would coordinate with that look, there is a great peel and stick tile (looks high end) that's also super easy to apply. http://aspectideas.com/ Hope that helps.

I used peel and stick vinyl floor planks and painted them white to look like shiplap. I did have to use finishing nails to ensure that they stay up, but they've been up for a year and a half and no problems.

Depending on how you cook. If you fry a lot I per wouldn't recommend this. A friend of mine used 18"x18" peel-n-press floor tile. It's easy to cut and easy to install.

My son and I had real nice results by using 1/4 inch plywood that we had ripped to 5 7/8 inch strips at Home Depot (the 1/8 inch is to allow for the width of the saw blade thus giving you 8 slats all the same size.) Talk nicely to the person doing the ripping, the signs say no precision cuts, but if they are nice they try a little harder. We used a nail gun but a regular hammer and nails will work too. We used nickles to space the slats and were fortunate enough to have a level surface to start with. We liked the wood look so we just used polyurethane to seal. Sorry I cant provide pictures, it turned out nice. Cost was for 2 sheets of plywood ($20 or so) and the polyurethane (sorry he paid for that, don't know the cost.)

I understand that everyone is different and appreciate that, but a back splash that is washable paint is just as stunning as any of the other ideas. Pick a bold hue of your favorite color and use high gloss paint so it can be wiped down every evening if you cook every day. It will cheer you up in the morning and is least expensive thing to do. Easy to do as well. Or you could combine a few of the ideas with the paint. I don't have a back splash first because my kitchen counter and cabinets are busy enough and second because I hate grout so absolutely no tile was going behind the stove. I do something hanging on one and I decorate with colors I love. I have colored silicone utensils and holders for them two to be exact each in a different color. Personally for me it was more fun being able to display my things toadd interest. So why do you want to change your back splash? Go from there. Figure out what is bothering you about yours and you already told us your restrictions, so take it from their. Is this your home or a rental unit? Can you actually make a costly change? Are you handy or will you have to pay someone? What's your budget and be realistic and by all means don't purchase something that isn't a classic look because your home will be dated a few years from know but if you stay classic then you can sell it in the future without a worry. Sorry out there but why would you apply floor tile to your wall unless you plan on maybe picking solid colors and making a pattern so that you don't recognize it as floor tile when you look at it. A classic of course would be black and white like a diner if you like that or if you want to achieve that look you can do it with paint and tape and you can easily repaint but good luck removing floor tile. Bottom line is that it's your home and you want something your not sure what due to restrictions of it having to be easily cared for,so what is your style? Figure your style out figure your color choices. Sometimes I wonder how these came about, because if you think about it what sells a home is an up to date kitchen and bath so why use tile that changes so often it's a waste of money for a kitchen unless you are under the impression that you have to have one because you have friends that all have them? It's not realistic for you so do your own thing and maybe they will follow you. I'm not bashing anyone every idea is being given out of the kindness of everyone's heart and that is appreciated by me. I'm simply pointing out some things that at first sound great but in the end may not be realistic. Love you all because you guys have helped me.

Above info is so true. I've been in a quandary for months about new backsplash since I had new counter tops put in. It's currently painted and you convinced me to just go with the flow of colors and repaint in a color I like. Thanks.
