How can a smooth textured concrete be made

The type of concrete you need will depend on what your are making.... a patio will need a different mix than a sidewalk or footing.

Tamp it down with heavy piece of wood to get out Air pockets, then smooth by dragging Timber down it.

When you pour your concrete you will have pebbly stones unless you "work it" As you read more about "Finishing Concrete" you see them talk about using the trowel and small amounts of water plus maybe small amounts of fine sand and cement on the top "floating" the surface to create texture or smooth.

Buy it without gravel or stones. There is a good quality sack-crete you can buy without stones in it.

From what I remember of helping my father making and using concrete, it is how you finish the project that makes it rough or smooth. For smooth he would finish by smoothing the top with a small amount of water and a straight edge (for large areas he used a long board like a 2x4.).

I guess I should have been a little more expansive with my answer. With a metal trowel or a wooden handled float, (or a simple board), you are working the air pockets out of the concrete and the heavier pebbles or small rocks go down. As they do you get more fluid and a smoother surface comes to the top. If you let it set too long that is hard to do but easier to put in texture. If it becomes too dry as it sits up or hardens, dip metal trowel in water (usually doesn't take much added water) and wipe the flat of the trowel over surface bringing the smooth up sending the rocks down. Read instructions on Cement sack as to set up time to work it.

I guess if concrete is applied directly to the texture it won't be smooth enough, So first the wall should be sand and clay properly, so it can take off this main problem and create a smooth surface.
