Transitioning from wood to carpet and wood to tile?

I have a long hallway that is wood and 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and my laundry room off the hall. Do I need to do the same tile in the bathrooms and laundry room? What about carpeting choice? Should I do the same color in the bedrooms?

You can do it any way you wish although if you visit model homes for sale you will find that most have the same color carpeting in all bedrooms and the same tile in the bathrooms. The laundry room can be done either way. Because more expensive tile is usually used in the baths, many times less expensive tile is put in the laundry room.

Whatever colors you choose, try to have some contrast. Ex. Grey walls red carpet, pink walls grey carpet, beige walls brown carpet.

Although decorating trends come and go, there is no right or wrong as far as what style or color of floor covering to choose. The key word here is Transition. One of the hardest parts of the installation will be the transition areas.

Different kinds and styles of floor coverings each have their own heights, due to varying properties (harder, softer), thickness, and required underlay. Sometimes it is hard to find appropriate, well-fitting transition pieces that will stay in place and not be a trip hazard, under even normal use.

From your description, you have at leat 5 major transition areas to deal with. Before you make a final decision, plan out all these transition pieces first.

I love watching the flipping shows and recently they used a very large tile in the laundry room...commented "installs faster and less grout to worry with!"

(I hit the wrong button) Keep in mind that continuation of any flooring, be it tile or carpet makes the home look less cluttered and larger!

  • I would suggest to just use the same carpet. It will make on decision easier. As for the tile in the bathrooms and laundry room, coordinate them. Make sure the colors don't look terrible together and are all the same style (rustic, traditional, farmhouse, etc.)

If you use the same tile in every room that you want to put tile in, there will be less waste in the amount of "extra" tiles that you have left over once the box is opened.
