Go to Youtube.com and type in diy feral cat shelter. Choose which one you want to make.

I had a padded box that I put old blanket in and placed in protected area of patio. In winter I ordered outdoor pet warming pad and placed in box. Also draped old curtain over open area to keep out wind/rain. I put out food and water each morning and took up at night so wild creatures and rats would not be a problem.

My friend has been sheltering feral cats for years. I will check with him and if I can get back to this site, Kcarnold, I will give you his answer.

If you are going to have feral cats, please have them spayed or neutered since cats breed several times a year, as sell as give them rabies shots every year. Feral cats are wild and subject to rabies like other free roam animals...yes, even in populated areas!

While it is a good idea to tend to needy animals, keep in mind that there are also risks!

I live in a very densely populated area where people are feeding feral cats without any vet care or sense of responsibility. Recently, we had a report of rabies near...how long until someone gets scratched and possibly infected?

Be kind to animals, but also be responsible! I don't mean to preach, but when the safety of a community is put at risk, it is terrifying. I pulled into my driveway recently and a mother cat ran across the edge of my driveway with a kitten in her mouth...one of those feral cats probably within a few feet of me.

Thank you. I contacted the local feral cat society (FACE clinic) "last spring" and for $20 they spayed, vaccinated and clip the ear of male cat who took up residency under our gazebo. Afterwards they returned the cat to my property. I have not seen that cat since June. Currently, I am trying to befriend the cats/kittens so I can capture them and take them to the FACE clinic also (estimated cost to me $120). The proposed shelter will hopefully keep them out of my gazebo and barn when they are returned to my property this winter (hopefully, they will also relocate them selves). I am a dog person🤗

I have seen some made with plastic storage containers and Styrofoam ice coolers. Cut an opening in both, cooler sits inside plastic container with blankets in and around cooler. Cudos to you for caring for the cats!

Jeanette has a very good point about this may being an example of good intentions causing more problems.

Perhaps your desire to help animals could be rechannelled instead into supporting the local animal shelters such as the SPCA .

Excellent! We have neighbors who are encouraging feral cats when our lots are only 1/4 to 1/2 acre...too close to allow for such. The bad thing is they are not taking any responsibility for their care or multiplying!
