Hi Jo-Anne, I've always found that a truly "straight" room just doesn't exist. With tile I always make a big x with a chalk line to find the exactly center of the area and then work out from there. I would do the same with wall paper, making sure your first piece is level and in the exact center.

Start at one inside corner. Strike a plumb line 2 inches shorter than the width of the paper. Paste or dampen paper as instructed, place paper on line and smooth. Paper will overlap corner. Using SHARP razor blade (you can also use a box cutter) cut into corner. It is advisable to clean the razor from each cut. I use 1 blade to 1 roll of paper. Nothing dulls knives and razors quicker than paper.
