The taller the planter is ... the less you have to bend over.... we use the galvanized horse/stock tanks about $80 for one that is 4 ft long x 2 ft tall x 2 ft wide... we start all our citrus trees in them and have had olive tree(s) in 3 of them for about 4 years (they will go in the ground this fall)... we also built 2 large wood planters 4 ft wide X 8 ft long X 3 ft tall ( for veggies like lettuce, radishes, etc) using 4x4s for the corners and 2x6s for the sides and ends... rabbit wire on the bottom to keep out gophers and landscape fabric stapled inside to keep the dirt in. Don't use pressure treated for beds that will be used for food plants (the pesticide leaches into the soil)

How much space do you have to work with? I've seen them small and large and all sizes in between. One thing to keep in mind is that you want to be able to reach into the bed.

I use the galvanized horse/stock tank for a pond (actually it is old and plastic) but great for goldfish and water lilies (and no special insurance because it isn't in the ground). And 'Marty' is so on for the beds...You can also use 'blood meal' around the exterior to keep out 'critters' (and good for the soil.)I love the raised beds!!!
