Mantel and hearth. There are some neat plans around the web.

Tiles could cost you some serious bucks. Here's what I would do: run a simple ledge mantel the entire width of the wall, then add narrow vertical molding every two feet or so to mimic expensive paneling. Paint the mantel and the paneling the same color as the base molding to make it look unified. Also, I'd consider investing in a flush mount for the tv so it sits closer to the wall. They are not that expensive, and if you surround the tv with a beefy picture frame it will give it more visual weight. Hope this helps!

Try a Habitat Store or see if there is a non-profit resale business. In Lincoln, NE, there is a store called the Restore. Definitely not architectural restoration resale prices. People donate leftovers. Or see if you can find tile under materials on craigslist.

Youl could build a lovely surround and mantel using MDF preprimed trim and sheeting. It's less expensive than solid wood and it's ready to paint. You could design it to work right into the board and batten too.

Thanks so much, now, I DO have some of the floor tiles left so am probably going to use those....had slate priced and to make the face of the FP uniform, adding some here and there to even it out, would be about $45....not bad at all, but then I thought, why not use what I have? they are 12" x 24" tiles, so we can cut those and stick em on...again am going to try to put the drawing I made, but please feel free to change or move things (DH would love to leave that TV there...it's on an arm that pulls our and swivels around.

Is everything above the mantel wainscoting or two different kinds of applications? Seems like it all should be the same, one or the other. My opinion only. I do like your drawing of what you plan to do.

7 years later. Problem resolved! We’re all moved in and settled. We did the shiplap on fireplace wall and found black shiny tiles to go around the fireplace. Noe the box covering the now bigger tv. We compromised as I don’t like the tv over fireplace look! We’re even ready for Christmas!

thanks to everyone again for the great ideas.
