How to take care of Kimberly queen fern in winter

Bonnie Boone
by Bonnie Boone
I have two Kimberly queen ferns that need to live through the winter. I have no room in my house. Do I cut them back? cover and store in garage? Or what?

Not knowing where you are I can pass along general advice that I just read on fern sites. They quit growing below 60 degrees and "cannot tolerate freezing temperatures". If it goes below freezing in your garage you will need to change one of your parameters. Either find a place that does not freeze or allow your tropical ferns to go to their final reward.

Buy a rolling clothes rack. Buy 2 clamp on lights (box store or even Walmart). Put in the garage and get 2 grow lights. Water once a week, deeply and the grow lights will help through the winter. No need to cut them back.

If you live in a cold-winter area, you'll need to treatthis plant as an annual or move it indoors for thewinter. Inside, it likes medium light with abundant humidity. Try grouping your Kimberly queen fern with other houseplants and place a small humidifier near it to increase the amount of moisture in the air.

I live in Maryland where temperatures get below freezing. I have a simi heater garage, that for years I have keap my citrus trees and Boston ferns in for the winter. As much as I tried, given light, water and humidity, the ferns always make such mess I findly gave up. This year I bought Sun Queens and as cheap as these plants are I going to just buy replacement in the spring, no more mess !
