If fitted - Ignore it. and add a coloured Rug or two. If a loose Rug - Turn it over and dye or paint on the back of it...........

Shampoo it the best you can, and then cover with area rugs until you can replace it.
I have mine cleaned regularly and now looking at flooring options . . . Just remember your guests really there to see you, not your carpet.
Use up lighting, tall plants (silk or real), bright and interesting wall treatments to get people to look up, not down. If you can, use throw or area rugs over the worst stains. Rearrange the furniture if possible, too. Keep the carpet clean, even if you plan to replace it soon. It will keep down prorated and look better. 😇

You can use the same paint technique for overall color or another design/pattern. Stripes, chevrons or color blocks using tape come to mind.
