How to edge landscape so the mulch does not end up in your lawn?

When trimming the mulch flies everywhere and ends up in the grass. The edging does stay defined, grass starts to creep into the flower beds, or the flower beds begin to invade the yard.

Just use a different edging, something like brick or stone.
You can use edging that lays flush to the lawn for ease of mowing, but lower the height overall of the area you are bordering so the ground plus the mulch are at or slightly below the level of the lawn. Attached is a pic of the type of edging to which I refer:
It depends on how big your garden is. My husband put a heavy plastic edging, bought at your hardware store. I put bricks around my herb garden and it's important to do "edging " around all of your beds by removing enough soil or whatever is growing to insert the bricks or plastic edge. The mulch will stay in place.
I used recycled rubber to edge my gardens. It comes in 4 ft-8ft lengths and is easy to shape and break to fit any area. It's very easy to install as it just sits on the ground and is anchored by metal spikes included. Welcome to gardening...the large cedar bark is the worst. I keep a broom outside to sweep back the bark before trimming. I also keep a machete to use on grass trespassers.
You could line your garden with anything that is higher than the mulch. You could even use pieces of leftover plywood cut into strips that you could sink in the edge of the garden. You could shape the top, use different heights, paint them the same or assorted colors and even decorate by painting flowers or words, etc. As long as they are taller than the height of the mulch, you should be able to edge and not loose any mulch.

I wanted a subtle but attractive border and easy to maintain so I went with mondo grass. It is very small monkey grass. It is a dark green color and it is easy to grow. It works great if you want a natural border!
Line the beds with retaining wall bricks. Not a cheap fix but the most permanent.
