This particular cutting board was designed and created out of Amy's need for exactly what it does. So, I guess it wasn't really a need, cutting board overlap one side of the sink would be handy. She also threw in the idea of having a cutout in the back where she could scrape scraps. This is super convenient and makes for easy cleanup by just placing a bowl under the cutting board, inside the sink.
This video shows an overview of the project from start to finish.
The cutting board is mainly made out of strips of wood that have been cut down to certain widths. We used oak and walnut wood for the cutting board. The oak was cut down to 2.5" widths and the walnut strips were 1" wide. The boards were also planed and jointed. You can see that in the video above.
All of the strips were glued together using wood glue and clamps. We made sure each piece received a good even coat of glue and then clamped them extremely tight.
After the glue had dried we planed the whole board once again and trimmed off the edges. Everything was measured and set to a certain size based on the dimensions of our sink. This could be different for everyone, so I want mention our dimensions.
We rounded the corners and cutout a space in one edge. This space will allow for the placement of a bowl underneath the cutting board while it is sitting over the sink. This is extremely useful for discarding food scraps when cutting.
We sanded the whole board using various grits of sandpaper and stopping at 240-grit. Then we applied a butcher block conditioner as a finish. This took several coats and will need to be repeated over time.
We also added rubber feet to the bottom. This helps lift the cutting board over the edge of the sink.
As you can see it sits where it needs to really well. The rubber feet sit on the counter on the left side and another pair sit on the basin divider of the sink.

The cutout is extremely useful as well. You can see it being used in the video above.
