My kitchen is my sanctuary. Its messy sometimes, (ok, a lot of times) but I like to think of it as “lived in”. Someday I will be doing a complete kitchen makeover, because I can see in my mind exactly how I want it to look. For now, until time and money become available, I do little projects like this DIY Spice Rack to keep my muse smiling.

OK, now please don’t judge me…but for YEARS I have kept all of my most used spices out on my counter top next to the stove. I used to keep them in the cabinet above LIKE A NORMAL PERSON, but it always bothered me to dig through the cabinet looking for things when I was cooking. It would never fail, something I needed in a hurry would be buried in the back of the cabinet, and I’d have to pull everything out to find it…in the meantime I was burning something on the stove. One day I decided I was over it, and pulled my top spices out of the cupboard and just kept them on the counter. Tacky, right?
I loved my “lazy Susan”, and thought maybe I was being clever by using a decor bucket on top of it and keeping smaller jars of spices in there. Clearly, I was mistaken. This looks terrible. But I turned a blind eye, and kept it “as is” for far too long.

One day, I’d kind of had it. I was tired of looking at all the name brand labels, different sized containers with lids that wouldn’t close due to over-use…and I hopped on Pinterest.

All I needed was a nudge, and I found it. A picture of corked glass tubes filled with spices. It was adorable, but I knew I would need more than glass tubes…

My next inspiration? Hobby Lobby. It was a Monday afternoon. i wandered the isles and I found an entire section of glass bottles, jars, and tubes! OH MY! The holy grail of ideas! SWEEEEEEET!!! Spending money on a craft project was not in my budget, and I knew I would have to assess the situation before I made a purchase, so I came back home and started planning in my head.

Looking through my spices later that day I suddenly remembered that I had already purchased glass jars and tubes at Michaels a few months back for a different project. I found them in a bargain bin at the front of the store and bought a bunch for less than $20! Silly me, they were in a box underneath my desk this whole time! EUREKA! The best part? The jars already came with a chalkboard style label, so all I had to do was fill it up and write on it with my white paint marker!!!!

I was so excited and worked so fast, I didn’t take pictures along the way. Long story short, the ugly decor bucket went away and I stained the lazy Susan. VOILA!
OK OK I admit, I am also a coffee can hoarder…I mean, c’mon…remove the label it looks like a galvanized bucket! Adorable! It sits in the middle of the lazy Susan with my spice tubes, and the glass jars surround it. I mean, you have to admit, that looks RAD!

The spice themed wood trivets (behind) were added as an experiment…I made these too! I will be posting that project on Hometalk one of these days, but in the meantime see the DIY how to tutorial HERE
The moral of this story is…SPICES ARE PRETTY! Use them to decorate your kitchen! I also have jars full of white and brown rice and quinoa…look for different food items in your pantry you can display, tell the world you are a creative cook!
