put a fireplace ballon in the chimney. It should keep the draft down. Fashion a door for the fire place opening or make it into a cubby storage space.

You could use it for candles ... but if you seal it off... block off the chimney, top (to keep birds and critters out) and bottom to keep heat in... then use it to display a beautiful vase or art piece... or just cover it up.

Here's what I did with mine put A bunch of candles in it and use it for extra heat in the winter time if not it just looks pretty in the summertime

  • Yikes! Who decided that was a "fireplace?" I wouldn't use it either. If budget allows, then I would remove it completely. If not, clean it out and do the mirror and candle thing.

If you are not going to use it, but keep it, block off the flue to keep from losing heat up the chimney and keep critters from coming down the chimney. Instead of hiding it, I would actually frame it ion the sides and add a nice mantle. You can always use battery operated fairy lights inside to give a nice "fake" fire glow and have a mantle to decorate. I cannot tell from your picture how far off the floor it is, but you can always throw some cushions in front of it instead of having a hearth.

Do you rent or own? what’s the room being used as? Yo could cover it and paint to blend it in or have a hidden storage area maybe a good place for your safe.

We blocked the flue and slid an electric fireplace in the opening. It can be used to warm the room when it's cold, or just turn on the flame to enjoy the ambience. It wasn't very expensive.

I love that this is in your master bedroom, it could really be dressed up and romantic. I know you said you don't plan on using it but even putting in flickering candles (whether real or fake) inside puts a certain aura into a room.

Just a version of the candle idea...I went thrift store shopping and bought a bunch of mis-matched but interesting candle holders of various sizes and shapes, then added candles of various sizes in colors to compliment my decor. I haven't lit the candles yet because it's too pretty to disrupt, but it looks nice all year round.

I have a fireplace electric insert that is also a room heater when its extra cold.

You can also get the alcohol cans and put them in fireglass for a different look.... http://www.aquaticglassel.com/gallery/123663/6_Blue_on_Dark_Brown.jpg

I would certainly hang some nice art on it..... its a whole lotta wall.
