Look inside along the sides and corners. There should be screws that mount it to a frame attached to the firebox.Take photos before removing anything so you can reference them when you put it back on.

if this is an insert removal is difficult and potentially hazardous. To find out open the doors find a place to grip and pull. An insert will move but an after market fire screen could be screwed to the brick. Let me know what you find and maybe I can guide you farther.

    Just pull it out.

There are screws inside that attach to the opening. I did take the doors off, sprayed the frame, then used a screen instead of door.

We just pulled ours out. Cleaned it and spray painted it silver. Updated in a day! It’s also much easier to clean the inside of the glass when it’s out.

For your update, I would dry paint the bricks white, and spray paint the insert white as well.

I like your thought of white bricks but I think silver or antiqued silver would look good. Much depends on the decor of the room.

I've seen makeovers of fireplaces where they spray painted with the insert in place. They simply taped newspapers up with painter's tape to cover the fireplace and other areas nearby.

wont just pull out. Seems to have screws

The bricks would not be totally white, just the raised edges of the bricks. Painting the insert white, would pick up the bits of white on the brick. It gives everything a fresh new look.

Don't pull it out! I papered and taped off my brick and spray painted the insert with heat resistant paint...looks great.

If you paint it, be sure to use heat resistent paint, otherwise it will just begin to peel off when the fireplace is on. I spray painted the dated brass on my fireplace with black, resulting in fresh updated look.

Post pictures to share your project when it is complete.

Probably uses lintel clamps to hold it in place. They function like "C" clamps holding the top of the door set in place. You'll need a flashlight to look inside after sticking your head through the door opening.

Just open and feel for either screws or small brackets. If you are going to paint either rough up surface or try denatured alcohol to take off the sesler. We tried a regular paint but the heat from the fireplace kept turning it dark or bubbled it. We finally used a high temp spray paint. Good luck!

I had my entire fireplace redone with stone and marble. My contractor didn't take the fireplace screen out. He taped it off (both outside and inside to protect the glass) and spray painted it. It was done in a matter of minutes.
