It is from early'80's when copper was "in" in Zimbabwe. I love it it has pride of place in my home!
It is a beautiful piece. Squeeze lemon juice into a bowl and mix with salt. Rub directly on copper. Allow to sit, testing periodically. Rinse with warm water and dry. You may want to use a furniture polish (no oil) to protect the copper from further staining.

Once you get it clean... find a good quality wax and do that to help keep it looking grand.
Once it's cleaned, try Wenol. You can order on line. You can get the polish and the cleaner. Product is made in Germany. That is all I have ever used to polish and clean metal. It does a fantastic job. A little elbow grease is required, but you will love the outcome.
You can try slathering the copper with ketchup. The slight acid content will clean copper.
