Try adding about 2 cups of white vinegar or cleaning vinegar to a load of towels and let them soak for several hours. Add another 1/2 cup to the rinse cycle. It's really tough to get out mildew odors and the sour smell things get from being left damp in the washer too long , especially if they have already been dried in a hot dryer.

I've also had luck with soaking towels in baking soda and hot water.

Just wash in GAIN detergent and CLOROX. The only thing worse than the mildew smell is a VINEGAR smell!

Add to the list- Dr bronners castille- citrus soap. Works for all kinds of things but definitely helps take smells out. I would soak first if really bad.

    Add vinegar to rinse dispenser.

Include a disinfectant / deodoraizer that will kill the mildew like adding Simple Green to your wash. It is non toxic and safe to use but will do the job. Add only half the laundry soap you normally use
