I think a lot of these small holiday gift bags are too pretty and charming to just use as throw-away wrapping for gifts. So I decided to use one as a home for a cute sock snowman! This finished project would make a great Christmas tree ornament or teacher's gift.
To start making a gift bag sock snowman, you can either use the foot section of a white crew sock, or the ankle/calf section. I chose to use the foot section of my sock by cutting off the toe and heel and using just the remaining tube section.

I also decided to tea dye my sock to give it a slightly beige or antique color to go with my gift bag. You can find the directions on how to tea dye your sock, along with my full sock snowman tutorial on my blog.
While your sock is drying, you can prepare your gift bag. First, cleanly cut off one of the bag's handles so none of the handle shows. Next, cut a piece of styrofoam or floral foam to fit in the bottom of your bag.
Once your sock is dry, seal off one end of your sock with an elastic band and hot glue. I have specific directions on how to do this on my blog.

Next, fill your sock piece with fiber fill or cotton balls until your snowman head is full and rounded. Following directions on my blog, add a stick or dowel and close up the other end of your snowman's head.
Once your head is formed and glued on to your stick, you can start to decorate and dress your snowman. I made a floppy felt hat for my little man and added a face with buttons and glitter glue. All these directions are on my blog tutorial.
The last step is to assemble your gift bag sock snowman. Insert the stick from your snowman's head into the foam in your gift bag. You may want to add some hot glue around your stick once you've placed it the way you want it in the foam.

Now you can add additional accessories and decorations to your bag, like little presents, winter greenery, and fake berries.
This little guy is too cute not to try making one for yourself, or as a gift for someone special. He'd also be adorable hanging from a branch on a Christmas tree!

How creative!! I am going to try this. I have noticed how so many people have started to throw some tissue in a bag and boom! Growing up we spent so much time to make things special!

Hi JoAnn - Thanks for your sweet comments. Yes, I think in all of the rush of the holidays, a lot of the special-ness of the season is lost. My mom used to spend all day making Christmas cookies for cookie swaps and parties. Now, people just buy something pre-made at the grocery store (but I'm guilty of this too). Too bad - I miss some of the old traditions too. Hope you have a cheery holiday!!
