Roman shades or what?

Honeybear Lane
by Honeybear Lane
Does anyone know where i can find a 107" aluminum blind that I can use to make my own roman shades for this wide window? Or should I do two side by side--would that look weird?

I was thinking I saw some at Sam's Club

You could make your own, pretty easy. But I think 2 side by side on a sliding window would lool fine.

I think that 107 inches would make the blinds sag in the middle,

You didn't say if you own the home or if it is a rental. If a rental surely the owners could find them. If nothing else use Bing or Google to find places that custom make them, although that could be costly.

I'd use 3, one for each window pane.

I think two would be pretty, as well as more manageable. One would be very heavy.
  • Pam Hilbert Pam Hilbert on Mar 21, 2014
I agree with Pam-three would be good!!

I put up a shade that was that wide on my large window but it sagged real bad from the weight. the next time I decided to try it I used 3 shades- I was trying to figure it for 2 but the numbers worked better if I used 3 and I was glad I did. when it was real cold out I only opened the center one and it still looked good. I figure it would have looked odd if I had only put up 2 and then only opened 1 shade. Even if you decide to do roman shades yourself you need to be careful that you have real good things to hang it with. you do not want the sagging.

You can buy 107" aluminum blinds from a company called Blindster.com. I have bought from this company and have been very satisfied with the quality, delivery time and customer service.

I don't think two, side by side would look good since your window looks like a three pane window. I agree, do three side by side or if you can or have someone make you a valance-type hanger and make your own roman shade. Look on Pinterest or google "roman shade for wide window, lots of ideas. Might have to make some adjustsment for your wide window, but doable.

Blindstogo.com. You can order any size from them.
  • Cindy Cindy on Mar 21, 2014
They will sag. Plus it's a lot of weight for the hardware and the wall. Three for the amount of panes you have. JC Penney drapery dept can help you as well as order them for you. They sell tons of custom shades.

I made two roman shades for a friends 84" window. I recommend doing two or three for your window. She loves being able to have one closed as there is a glare on TV. And leave the other up or partial closed. Good luck with your project. Post your finished results 😊

You will want to do 2. The weight of 1 would make it unusable! Experience speaks:)

My bedroom window is that size. I used two. When you get to a window that wide. You have to go into sizes for a small patio slider door to get the width. Vertical blinds ,then cut the lenght. Also with that length you have a problem with them bowing inthe center.

SPLIT IT UP!!! The drawstring just failed for my oversized blind on my front window and it is in mint condition otherwise!! The weight of the oversize blind puts too much wear and tear and stress on the SAME exact weight cord and hardware that they use for smaller blinds... I would go with three for a cute effect!

I used to work in a place that made blinds. We did side by sides a lot. You can get 2 shades on one header. Or you can do 2 seperate one. Check with stores like sherwin williams. Not sure if levelor is still is business but u can check on line. They have tons of colors and patterns
  • B. Reynolds B. Reynolds on Mar 21, 2014
I think 3 would look better for the window space.

...being a former for many years but now retired Custom Decorator for JCPenneys....I have this to say.....for this size, you have to order more than one blind on a header...you only divide where there is a mullion....note, they will each have their own lift and tilt.....sorry to say, if they sag, then they weren't of good grade...i.e. sturdy enough header to support weight....and something else....nothing can be done about gravity...so if you have a large width blind, it's OK to use your "other" hand to gently support raising it with the "other" hand. ...AND...remember you have to allow for "stack" so if you want a completely or almost completely open view blinds might not be your answer...for this you'd want a honeycomb shade....their stack is just minute. What you give up on this install is the opportunity to have them down, tilt and still see out....your decision.

Why not use a 1x2 , heavy string, hook n I, you can buy the tape for the blinds at Joann's, sew it on and all the loops are in the same spot, you won't have to sew each one.

Yes I JC Penny make custom made shades, blinds. I had some roll up shades in cotton,in colors that match my kitchen, dinning areas. I have three windows separate but together, like yours.

I got mine at Lowes. they have so,e really long ones and just cut mine to fit. good luck. thats one big window. Mine is 96" I believe and I have 2 that size.

I've found them that long before and they won't sag in the middle because they come with center supports

We have a large window. I used 3 pairs of blinds. Measured it out and used the largest in the center first the 2 smaller ones on the outer sides.

Vertical blinds or split it up. American Blinds did my large window. I am thrilled with it. If you want 1 blind choose the lightest material possible.

I do window treatments for people and I would do three in that window.
    • Eileen Smith Eileen Smith on Mar 04, 2015
@Cindy Darnaby I totally agree. I had a rental with a window like this and Landlord put two. I hated it wish he had put three so the center one could be open and no lines in the view.

I noticed you said you want to make roman blinds from them. Could you possibly buy one of those plastic exterior type shade blinds? If you don't want to do two of them they are made for large openings. They are ugly for interior applications but if you are going to cover with fabric to make roman shades it might work. I haven't tried it ...but it is just a thought to be considered.

Since the window seems to have 3 separate panes. I would do 3 blinds. Much easier also to find 3 narrow blinds..
  • Jeanette S Jeanette S on Mar 22, 2014
I think I would revert to the old "lined drape" method with a very sturdy rod. I would use a double rod and put semi-sheers underneath and then a heavy curtain/drape overl

?Have the home improvement store cut you some light wooden pieces to use, Bamboo would also work. Just thinking to keep the cost down.
  • Katie Katie on Mar 22, 2014
I would suggest the using the same number of blinds as you have separations. Matchstick and bamboo blinds are a nice alternative. You can line them as well.

I had honeycomb shades in my old house and wish I had them where I live now. They are very lightweight and so pretty.
  • Jan Remling Jan Remling on Mar 22, 2014
Sorry about that, I didn't realize...but go to any Home Depot for them. They carry a number of shade brands and many types. Have you made Roman shades before? Out of a conventional shade? Shades in that width are fairly expensive....$500 and up.

I have a window in my den109" and the price for one blind was out of sight! So I am planning to do 3 single blinds to fit in the size of each window! I did it on a bedroom window and from outside it looks like one! It will also make it easier to wash in the tub when the time comes! If you buy stock blinds, you can have them cut at the home Improvement stores that you buy from!
