  • Have it professionally steam cleaned. Makes all the difference in the world. You will be surprised how munch gunk will come out of them. Regular cleaning also prolongs the life of the carpet. Shop around as local independent carpet cleaners can be just as good if not better than national chains and sometimes even cheaper.

  • If you don't want to hire a professional, rent a machine. They do a pretty good job!

Most carpets respond well to steam cleaning. You can either buy or rent a machine....the rentals get much hotter and generally do a better job if the carpeting is really dirty. Use the recommended chemicals in the machine to make it work, and follow the instructions. Let dry thoroughly, then vacuum very thoroughly to refluff the carpet.

First vacuum it several times to make sure that all of the dirt/debris is out. If you don't want to call in the pros, then either buy or rent a home steam cleaner. I don't use the commercial rug shampoo - I use an oxygenated cleaner like OxyClean or Awesome Orange and water in the tank. Works like a charm!

Oxy Clean works great but get the kind with NO FRAGRANCE. The other is so strong smelling it is nauseating.
