Usually they stay where you put them.

Make sure it is off the floor, propped up on wood blocks. Keep a box fan running on low all the time, in addition to a dehumidifier . Cover loosely with a fabric cover to keep dust off the mattress or a cloth envelope mattress cover.

Stand it up on the end, not the side, as it will kinda warp. Also put it on wooden pallets and not just the floor. Uhaul sells zippered covers for mattresses, tvs etc. That would prevent it from getting dirty, or you could wrap it in clear plastic from Walmart or Lowes like you put on windows in winter.

Did you know you can get plastic pallets? I've seen them under pallets of merchandise in stores, and there are online merchants that sell something quite similar. A family member got some to put in their basement to store things up off the damp floor. The plastic doesn't wick moisture up the way wood does.
