Annie Sloan Chalk paint results?

I’m thinking about changing the color of my stairway banister and my large bathroom vanity to a more espresso color to better match the furniture. Annie Sloan chalk paint was mentioned to me as being extremely easy since there’s no prep work involved. I’ve used it on bureaus in the spare room before but not on something that’s so detailed (leaving rungs white) and used every day. Anyone have comments?

I'm not sure whether or not I would use ASCP on the banister. For sure, Annie Sloan herself paints everything in sight, and it's been used on kitchen cabinets galore across the blogosphere. I know that our family use of our banister periodically results in a need to clean it of the oils from our hands, sometimes a very light and easy sanding helps with that. Which might not be much of an issue for you; you would have a wax finishing coat on it, clear or dark, buffed to a slight sheen, and it would feel good, sort of silky, to the hand. I can see from your picture that ASCP in graphite would not be your color choice, but I can't remember offhand if there is a deep espresso-like color in her palette or if you would need to mix that up yourself. The Purple Painted Lady has a color-mixing chart you might use for help with that, or a simple internet search might turn up with the exact mix. I think you could do it, my final answer! Just my own opinion.

Thanks. I did buy the espresso paint combo at Purple Lady from their color charts but I’m still hesitate. I don’t want a completely matte finish but I thought the wax would help shine it up a bit.

Brushes are cheap, but strong sponge

Will get around curves. Sponges drip=protect stairs etc plastic drape with drytowel rags or paper

If you are going with an espresso the ideal product is getting a gel stain kit at Home Depot or other hardware store. No stripping or sanding. A few steps but great and permanent results. Chalk paint is great for going with color and and repurposing old pieces but when choosing wood stain colors id go with gel stain.

i am not sure that the chalk paint would stand up to that kind of repeated use without a lot of sealant or having to redo it....

Thanks everyone. I’m still hesitate to use the ASCP re your responses. It’s the no sanding prep that I like about it. Also that it’s thicker so no doubt upping like regular stain especially with the white rungs. The espresso is definitely the best choice in color Since my furniture and glass cabinets at the top of the stairs is the same color. I’m changing that ugly cheap carpeting too.
