Ceiling has leak marks in a large, should we scrape popcorn or patch?

Popcorn ceilings are not used much anymore. Plus if you patch it, the patch will always show - even when painted over. It's real hard to completely match the popcorn spray. It's not hard to remove popcorn - just messy. It will scrape off if dampened with a spray bottle. Just remember, old popcorn ceilings may have asbestos fibers in it that can cause cancer if breathed in. Always wear a mask.

First, you MUST SEAL THE WATER STAIN! Use Kilz, spray or roll on. It's basically shellac. Then you can paint over that. If you must scrap off the popcorn there are canned sprays gor this. If your house is older than 1970, it might have asbestos in the spray. You can buy a small kit to test. It is potentially dangerous if you don't.
Spray w water before scrapping. There is a grand new tool that holds a bag and allows you to scrape the coating into it. Once done, seal the ceiling, retexture. It will be bare w the seam tape exposed. If you paint over that, you won't be happy. I did this in my formal dinning room so i learned!

First repair the ceiling so you won't have any more water leaks. Why not after fixing the ceiling repaint the entire thing? A patch shouldn't show if you apply at least two coats of good paint. But if it is just a discoloring from the water leak why would you patch it to begin with?

because it is also pealing.
