Positioning candle scones flanking a painting.

I want to place a pair of candle scones on either side of a painting. Is there a guideline for how close to the frame and how far up or down they should be in relationship to the frame height? The outside of my frame is 22 1/4" x 26 1/4". It is on a very long blank wall in my bedroom, so I used a very wide frame on this 16x20 picture, which flatters the picture well, but the wall still looks a little blank. I realize a more horizontal picture would be better, but this one is special to me and this is the only room where I can place it.

No, it is a matter of choice and proportion........Try it on the floor first.........

Thanks for responding! I do always end up going by personal choice after taping up a brown paper cutout of any décor first and looking at it from various distances, but I like getting other opinions to consider.

    Centered

The most basic and traditional way to arrange wall sconces with a picture is to place a sconce at middle height on either side of a single framed picture. This arrangement is symmetrical and versatile. It fits just about any wall space. Accurate measurements are key in ensuring that wall sconces are placed evenly at the mid-point of the picture. If you have a wide wall, give the picture at least a few inches of space on each side so the whole arrangement doesn't look cramped and isolated on the wall.

This was taken from the web, just very basic info on placing sconces on each side of a picture. :)

Thanks for responding! I always make brown paper cutouts of any wall décor, pics, etc., and tape them to the wall first, but so many decorators state the height to hang a picture should follow specific rules, so I was wondering if there were also guidelines from people who know about the placement of scones as well. I do not always follow such directions if another placement looks better to me personally, but I do like knowing what others think!

Without a picture of the wall, it's hard to say but sounds like you're trying to cover too much space with too little. Sconces will not fill the void.

Try a potted tree on one side and a floor lamp on the other side of the framed picture. Plants are great space fillers.

Good suggestion, and I do have plants filling such voids in my living room, but this is my master bedroom and a portion of that wall consists of a short "entry hall" area, then after that I need a little floor space bare for walking as putting anything there would be a problem. Then I have a wide low dresser and beyond that in the corner I have a chair and small table. Nothing high, so all together there is a wall area of a minimum height of 6' 10" (from top of the dresser to bottom portion of the tray ceiling) and a length of 17' 10" from the far wall to the door jamb. The wider frame I put on the picture I am using helps, but I wanted to put scones to make a more horizontal arrangement because of the long wall. I would not consider using a pair of pictures because I want to use this one, so felt scones were probably my best option. I do always like a lot of bare walls as it helps keep spaces airy feeling, but just not this much!

    Of course, why not!
