When painting an entrance door, do you paint the sides of the door the color or the outside or inside. A crazy question, but I have never known the answer to this. Thank you

  • it's pretty much a matter of personal preference. No right or wrong.

The only question that's crazy is the one not asked...

Most people paint the edges the same color as the interior frame.

Great question! My front door is an olive green outside and white inside. Since the door has to be opened to notice the sides of the door, you don't see the inside color at that point so I painted it the olive green! Just my humble opinion, mind you, its like a toss up!

There is a decorators rule for doors. I think the edges should be the color of the room into which they open. But ask Bing or Google for certainty.

Hi Barb. I would leave the sides as is. Sometimes painting the sides can make the door stick.

Hi Barb, this is husband to the lady in picture. You could go either way. You would be using exterior paint for the outside of the door. When the entrance door is closed, it is sealed from outside weather. It is not necessary to paint exterior paint on the edges of the door or on the jamb. If you have an entrance door and a storm door and you can leave your entrance door open, then painting the edges the same color as the outside of the door would be preferred.

I decide this by using how the door opens as my guide. I paint the sides to best match where you see them when the door is open.
