When posting, in the 'cost' section, do I put what it cost ME to make or what it would cost if I didn't have any of the materials? For example, I already have craft glue which technically means it didn't cost me. But if someone didn't have the glue, it would. ..know what I mean? ☺ anyway, I would appreciate feedback on the 'proper' way to enter the cost of a project. Thanks!

Technically it can go either way. Lots of folks state what it cost them to make the project, yet list the other materials as "had on hand" and insert a blurb that if one needed to purchase your "on hand" items it will cost more. You just want to provide a general "cost to make" for those that may want to do the project for themselves. Prices can vary widely all across the country (or internationally) for many items. For instance, many people pick up pallets for free, where I live they are $10 and up, I just buy wood at the lumberyard, as for me, that is less expensive.
I list that I had it "on hand" if it's an item I already had, and mention where it can be purchased. I think most DIY'ers have some supplies on hand. If not, that would increase there cost. For example, if I use a dab of glue that I already had, the cost to me was minimal. But, I do list everything under the materials. Hope that helps. Excellent question, Marc. I find it frustrating to read a title with a seemingly low cost for the project only to read later, that most of the materials used were previously purchased before the project began. Seldom are any materials absolutely free.
If you do have time, please do try to be as thorough as you can as far as separating items that you happened to have already, and items that you newly purchased for the particular project. I am a Hometalker who does appreciate knowing at least the aprox price of materials and tools used.
I am usually trying to inspire readers to do things with what they have. Now, I have a lot of supplies, and I shop at Walmart and Dollar Tree and Hobby Lobby, so if I go out and buy anything, I list that, but not the cost for a set of Unicorn SPiT. And the cost of some if the things listed for me is often outrageous. Why would I spend $4 on toothpicks when I can buy them for $1; or $24.95 for paint I can buy for $5 or less, when the project will use an ounce of paint? Real prices listed on other projects. I realize there is a small commission included, and I may be on the wrong railroad, but I’m assuming DIYers in general wany to save money while doing a quality project. But that’s me. 😇
