are you going to grow the tomato plants to maturity or start start them for transplanting in the spring? if starting for transplants, its about 6 weeks before the last average frost date- you can get that info from the net- just type in last average frost date for zip code x (fill in the numbers)

In New Jersey it would be late March or April. They need warmth to germinate, so I recommend using a plant heat mat, or start them in the house. Once they germinate they can withstand cooler temps as long as they don't get to freezing.

Late February or early March would probably be the best time.

the last average frost date.....you can look it up by zip code. In iowa at my zip code the last average frost date is may 15. Some times I get light frost after that date....the news is great about warning the area growers as it affects the corn crops as well.

so if last frost date is may 15, I count back wards for 6 weeks and that’s the day I plant my seeds in the grow trays, 6 weeks later, the plants get hardened off...acclimated to being out side...and then planted in the garden.

once you figure out your last average frost date, count backwards for 6 weeks, that’s when to start your seeds.

Plants go out after the last average frost date.

the national weather burrow keeps track of the hi and low temps for the years. they know that for zip code 52033 most of the frost should be gone by may 15 th.. they also track when the frost reappears in the fall.

so...i know that my plants/seeds can go out side after may 15. so...if i look at the package of seeds it will tell me how many weeks for the plant to grow to a trans plant able stage. for a tomato its 6 weeks, so count backwards from the 15 of may (for my area) and that's when i plant my seeds in grow trays.

you can google "last average frost date for - enter your zip code"- and see what happens.
