You can get some wallpaper, contact paper, photos, etc. in the style and colors you like. Recover the switch and outlet covers using those.

If you like primative, I would paint them either an Oceana, batik, ikat, petroglyph design using 2 coordinating colors of paint on the plastic covers. Then use spray gloss to seal.

If you choose to paint, remove the covers and thoroughly clean them. Light switches especially collect oils from hands. You can put them in the dishwasher. Then lighty scuff the plastic with fine sandpaper or steel wool to give the paint a slightly rough surface to adhere too. If you like primitive, my favorite is to cover each cover with woodgrained contact paper.

Remove and clean the plates. Then you can paint, use contact paper to cover, or mod podge pictures to them. You could print out old label pictures from the internet.

I can give you three ideas:

    1. Just buy the $.50 paint at Walmart unless you already have a variety. Focusing on each room, choose a background color and paint those colors. After a couple of coats have completely dried, paint on a thick coat of brown paint. While it is wet, pull a comb across the paint from top to bottom. Pull the comb a second time from the top, but make the lines just a little wavy. Wash the comb. When the brown dries, the covers will look something like old painted wood.

    2. For an American primitive painter look, paint the top 1/3 blue. Paint the bottom 2/3 either light green, straw yellow, or dirt brown. If you chose green, paint a square in white for a house. Top it with a triangle or trapezoid in red or black for the roof. You can add hedges, trees, a pond, people, sheep, a barn, clouds. The hayfield or the dirt garden is painted very similarly. The rules are: two-dimensional, so don’t add details that make the drawings more realistic; any colors are fine, as long as they could be house paints; rules can be broken.

    3. Paint detailed or simple scenes or country icons, such as roosters, a pine tree, teacups, etc. And a decal is as good as a painting for these.

I’m sure your house will be lovely, and the photos should be inspiring. 😇
