How can I get work out clothes smelling fresh

Synthetics and cotton. I want to avoid ruining the fabrics by using the wrong thing.

Try adding a heaping tablespoon of baking soda to your wash every time you wash. It will help keep them smelling nice and will also brighten without hurting the material.
First, air the clothes out in the fresh air for a couple of hours. Then pour 1 cup of baking soda into the laundry load and run the longest wash cycle you can. Then air dry.
Oxyclean presoak, launder as usual, with white vinegar added. Either Oxyclean or vinegar alone might be enough.
This tip is timeless and not just for baby clothes.
