Could you have shelving on one side and only hang clothes on the other? It might create some space if there are things you could fold and keep on shelves instead of hanging on both sides. Or create double rods on one side so you can hang two sets of clothes along the wall and do just shelving opposite.

If you could attach a picture of your closet, that might help someone get a visual who could give you a good answer. :)

How about using soda can tabs to make your hangers be able to hang multiple items?

Try lineing the walls with pocket pouches shoe holders from the dollar tree this will help hide shoes, scarfs and add a long shelf above with baskets to store items or to stack boxesđź“Ś

Hang all your long items of clothing higher up to the ceiling. Hang your short items where your rod is now. You may need a step stool to reach the high items. OR place all your long clothing items to the back wall on a rod. Under your short items, stack plastic cubes (cubbies) and fill with your shoes, purses, hats, gloves/scarves or whatever. Buy a man’s pant hanger, you can hang lots of clothing and whatever items on them.

Take out one rod and install shelving.
