What can I do with a stone fireplace-it makes the room so dark.

It goes from the floor to ceiling and it looks rough and dark-like I would almost love to forget we have a fireplace. It is dark and ugly looking.

Hello. You can try to paint it or do a white wash on it.
What ever you do, do not paint the stone. It will decrease the value of your home. White mantle. White accessories may it up lighten up. Consider your lighting in the room- you should have 3 sources of light in a room.

I agree with Lisa to not paint the stone. Stone is not brick. Trying to paint it will result in a huge mess that you might regret.
An easier, cleaner and more effective way to lightening up the fireplace is to change the light that shines on the fireplace to a larger, brighter LED fixture, or at least LED bulbs.
If the mantle is deep enough for a runner, putting one in a lighter color fabric will also help lighten up the whole fireplace.

Is it perhaps very dirty? They make a waterless Paint & Peel fireplace cleaner that would get all the grime off.
