If you paint them in lite colors, it will be cheerful, dark colors will be depressing. You can also add cheerful curtains, and dish towels to keep this area cheerful.

I painted my gold oak kitchen cabinets in antique white with the brown gel stain which is applied on dry paint and then covered with clear paint. They look better now than they did brand new. I would say go with the light colors.

Lighter colors will help the room feel larger and brighter... also in a kitchen... don't forget that you can do the lowers in one color... like gray... and the uppers in light blue or white.. (or whatever colors you like...) you can even use a fun accent color (like turquoise or coral) on one area, like a coffee bar)

Remember it is only paint... if you don't like it... the priming is done... just change the color(s)

Get paint chips and see what works best in your home. What shade looks best with your counters? What does with your flooring? Took my a few months to find the right color to paint my kitchen cabinets. Consider getting new hardware for them too. It is like jewlery for cabinets.

Go light. Lighter colors make the space bigger. White cabinets are the most common choice these days. Use a semi-gloss for easier maintenance. Flat not appropriate for kitchen cleaning.
