Anyone know what this bush is?

I have two of these bushes on the side of my house. They are very invasive but pretty this time of the year. They grow to about 6 feet tall and send up suckers all over the garden bed.

If it has THORNS,,,,,JAPANESE QUINCE, blooms early spring, comes in several colors, from white--pinks--deep reds. Later in the year it has a hard apple looking fruit. Used lots in spreads and jams..its VERY VERY BITTER if eaten raw..good one if you want to keep kids from jumping thru an area....the thorns are WICKED!

I never had a problem with suckers,,,, It may be the way you are pruning it.. often that leads to sucker growth in some plants.. there is a definate learning curve on pruning...

It does have thorns but has never had any fruit form and it's a very established bush. Lot and lots of suckers.

ornamental quince. Pretty and hardy. Dig up the suckers and share. probably needs fertilizing for fruit production. I break up the soil around the roots and add cow manure in with soil. Be sure to have good soil cover over manure or you will have big flies and a definite smell when the sun comes out.

It look like Sweet Peas to me. That is a flower, not a food. But they don't have thorns.

I have one....it is a Quince. Mine always has lots of fruit, some are the size of a small apple. It blooms very well and is a bright tangerine color. Many years it spits blooms on and off all summer.

I think it may be a wild mallow plant which grow wild and blooms this time of year in n.c.

A quince will spread from the roots and become larger in diameter as time goes on. It's the nature of the plant, so plant where it can grow naturally. I rarely prune mine.

My quince has fruit and I do nothing to it or for it ... the people I bought this house from, 25 yrs ago planted it and it was established then ... have no idea how old it might be - Native Americans used the thorns as pins to hold things together ... I prune mine severely every 2 yrs because it's right behind the house.

I have a huge one it's about 10ft tall and it's wide.....it's a Quince... Mine spreads like crazy....I try too dig up the baby plants....but it seems there too hard too dig out.....the birds build nests in mine....and mine also has some thorns....and round balls of some type of fruit....the pinkish flowers are Beautiful in the spring....and last a while....I live in York, pa.....
