Spray paint for metal surfaces can make it look totally different in color and texture.

If you don't want to paint it or replace the globes/shades, go to Habitat for Humanity Restore or other thrift stores. Keep going back - you will find lots of lighting fixtures that you can use.

You can add different light fixtures to update the look. New lightbulbs like these will make all the difference as well.

Exactly what I was thinking, to spray paint metallic and use Edison bulbs.

Janet Pizaro's link shows a ton of ideas and Shoshana and Rpepplesjr are on target also. The only thing I want to add is possible use of adjustable socket adapters that allow you to change the angle of the build.

I did a friends house with pallet wood flat on the wall to frame the light after we painted the metal a light grey and dry brushed it with a medium dark brown. Vinegar soaked iron nails made a good evening stain for the cut ends....

I had these outdated lights in my bathroom, took them down and bought two new lights at home depot. It's an easy fix, there is only one hole behind these lights. I had two sets of these to replace. Good Luck!
