I am considering purchasing a coffee table that I like very much ,however ,it only comes in white or black gloss type paint and I need a medium brown or fruitwood color. I thought that if I could paint over it ,it might work. I don't want to buy it unless it's feasbile ,without ruining the table.
I also don't want to get into a major production.
thank you for any input

You can paint it using a good primer / paint (latex based). Though you will want to evenly and carefully sand the entire piece to "rough" the surface. Using 0000 steel wool may be all that is necessary rather than more abrasive sandpaper. Recommend wearing gloves with steel wool. Nothing like a few metal slivers in your fingers to ruin your day.

Thanks Janet for your input. The tutorial was very descriptive and helpful. After thinking about it ,I decided that it might be too involved for this old lady, furthermore ,I live in a small apartment without a garage. So I scratched the gloss coffee table from Santa's list.

I searched again and found an attractive , unfinished square table which will be fine. It isn't exactly like the original gloss table that I loved ,but it's a close second.

I'll lay a tarp in the living room ,wear a mask and proceed to stain it to my satisfaction. Hopefully the results will be acceptable.

I was fortunate to get a Cyber Monday deal, which made my day.

      Thanks again for your help.

you will have to really 'degloss' the surface -- make take several applications -- my favorite product is Jasco -- no nasty fumes, and easy to use; the secret to any good paint job is 'preparation, preparation, preparation' !!
