...and am wanting some ideas on how to upgrade or redo it. Solid wood!

Sand it varnish it and gold guild a quarter of the legs up.
If the top is in good condition, cover it, sand the legs and paint antique white. Keep the top the existing color. If the top is not in good condition, sand that as well, but stain a dark color and seal.

If for some reason you decide to paint instead of stain, paint it 6 different colors, in wide overlapping stripes so that each area has at least two layers of paint. Then distress corners, curves and other random areas on the wood, exposing different colors all over the piece, as if it has been painted six different times. Best wishes 😇
If you like the cherry color and the traditional look (Like I do) - just get some Restore-A-Finish. Rub on with a soft cloth. Wipe on with a soft cloth, wipe off with a 2nd clean cloth. Wipe in direction of grain. Will take out white spots, scratches and cover wear marks. Cost about $9.00 for a big can at Home Depot of a hard ware store. Comes in colors to match most wood grains, I have "saved" tons of furniture for myself and family this way. Traditional dark furniture may not be the MOST popular right now, but it is an enduring style (Queen Anne), that remains in traditional decorating and has the look of class. Great you got this for free, I paid $70.00 for a used one from a thrift store. You can always find matching or coordinating side tables as well.
To me painting furniture is a real last resort. Maybe for something that was junk to begin with. Nice furniture should be restored. Glad you are going to keep it as it was intended. Try the Restore-A-Finish., I have had great luck with it.
A few years back - I found a free mahogany dining table with 4 chairs missing the table leaf, but easily seated 4. I did not need it but was able to restore it, put new cloth seats on the chairs. Turned out beautiful. I passed it on to a young family just starting out their first house home. I guess these folks would have painted it up!
Top is stained with paint, so I would have to sand it and refinish it.
