I had 1970's panelling in a rec room, wainscot height. I was resigned to just painting it, but on impulse I decided to try to remove one. I had assumed they had been glued on, but no! Only tiny finishing nails had been used. With care, I managed to remove it all with only the tiniest bit of damage to the gyprock behind it. I spent 20 minutes doing a bit of repair with plaster. The next day a quick sand and then I painted the walls. No hint that there had ever been panelling there at all. Maybe you will get lucky like me!
Paint it! We did! First apply aroma free Kilz primer, then paint it how ever you like. We sponge painted ours and used a border at the top along the ceiling. It was bright, inexpensive and beautiful
Paneling is easy to paint, just wash down, prime and paint. You can also putty the seams if you want a flat surface, although that is much more labor intensive
If it’s not the really smooth ,shiny paneling you can paint it. We painted dark paneling in our basement a cream color and it looked really nice and stood up to our 3 kids and all there ruffneck friend for years.
My MIL caulked the seems so everything was flat, then put textured wallpaper on top and painted that. She had a friend do this in her paneled kitchen and it looks like a totally different kitchen. Also she had him paint her panel in the den a very warm light green and it is beautiful. A coat of paint can make all the difference.

Paint them with built in primer, I did this in one of my picture projects and paint the trim white and what a transformation with just paint📌🎄
