How to redo my kitchen counters black?

Rachel
by Rachel
To give my kitchen a more newer/sleeker look, I would like to redo the marble kitchen counters black (and in the near future- also repaint the cabinets frame black, change the backsplash, etc. )

What are the steps to redo the countertops?

(please ignore the mess on the counter)
Thanks!

If you go to Home Depot, Lowes, or whatever big home supply store you have, they definitely have paint for counter tops. You may have to lightly sand the marble if that is ok with you and you don't care about them. Because if you ever wanted to go back to the brown, or sell your home (if you own it), you would have to have it professionally polished and it still may not bring up the luster. What is your goal with the kitchen? Are you going for a black and white color theme? Maybe I can help you with it, I love to design and change out. I changed my whole "vanilla" kitchen in my home. Even took off cabinet doors etc. I know with the counter-tops they have products that work even on Formica and it has been done. It is all about the primer. Let me know what you think.

the black and white look is exactly what we are going for!

We are redoing the tiles in the whole house (we are hiring someone proffessional for that), but I would really like to take on the counter top/ kitchen cabinets/ backsplash as my own DIY project.

Would love to hear any insight you have for me!

(and yes, we own the apartment)

You might be better off saving your money to get a new layout for your Kitchen, because it could be better and therefore look sleaker....

There are products at the hardware stores that use a concrete.... I have seen several on hometalk.... they turn out very nice...... I have also seen painted counters with chalk paint and sealed with Polly..... hich gives you lots of choices for color.....

the one thing I think is important after reading a lot about them is dealing with several layers of Polly!!

Hi I have kitchen counter tops, I'm not sure what they are maybe Kelly green formica. These were here in perfect condition, I sat a hot pot on last week and this area bubbled and now is peeling off. Wanted to change color for years have no idea what to do until we can afford to get something better. So that I can paint my oak cabinets I believe gray and maybe burnt orange walls ( not sure of color yet).

But can't change walked or cabinet until this green counter is gone, help please. Thank you

I get the DIY because I love to decorate but if I were you (because you don't have a lot of count top to deal with), I would buy white marble with the black/dark grey veining, or soapstone counter. They have really come a long way with the Formica counter tops today. Some look so nice you have to touch it to see if it is granite or not. The end result will be so worth it and beautiful and you still have the cabinets and back splash to have fun with. I honestly do not think if you paint the counter tops they will look good and you won't be happy. Counter tops aren't easy to do unless you cover them with another material. Friends of mine have used concrete. They put a thin layer right on top and gave it an industrial look. They rented a polisher and shined it up and it looked great. Some even stained them. But I honestly do not think you will be happy with the painted look on the counter. I would just tackle the cabinets and back splash myself. Paint the cabinets black (use a satin finish), and buy white subway tiles for the back splash. Use either off white or grey grout. I have painted my kitchen island black and it looks really nice. If you can not do tile work yourself then just google peel and stick tiles on the web and you wouldn't believe the products they have. I am doing a wall behind my boys bathroom toilet with the peel and stick vinyl tiles that look like hard wood floors (the ship lap look as they call it now)...love it and easy to do!!!
