Very small black or dark bugs in pantry, unopened cellophane wrapped or paper packages. Can you identify and advice?

Hi Regina. They are most likely weevils. I would empty the whole pantry and thrown anything opened out. Here is a link to tell you more.

Put a couple bay leaves in with your pasta. It stops bugs from infesting I also keep a couple bay leaves in my crackers, flour and sugar canisters.

Weevil larvae, they will eventually grow and create more bugs. Take everything out of the cabinet, vacuum edges so no crumbs are in there, scrub with a warm soapy water, and you can add peppermint oil to help deter them. These bugs are naturally occurring in products like crackers, cake mixes, flour, etc. Anything grain based. I take things I am not sure I will use fast and freeze them fro 24 hours before storing them in the pantry.

I've only had them badly enough to notice once. Two of my kids moved out on their own and we went through much less dry items than normal, and it was already pretty bad when we discovered the issue. It doesn't help that my dry goods were stored on a top shelf that I can barely reach. I did exactly as I told you, except I used Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile soap. I have never seen them again. But once every couple of months I get in there and wash it down again, and continue to freeze all grain based foods. No foggers or bombs for us, we organic garden and raise small livestock, so if I can stay away from that stuff I absolutely do!

Throw it all out, clean shelves etc. when you buy new pasta, flour etc put in freezer. You won't get bugs again.

pitch all the pasta, etc with bugs... check all grain based products including pet foods, crackers, cake mixes, dry milk, nuts, flour,etc.... clean out the cabinet with a mild bleach solution or bleach based cleaner... top and bottom of the shelves...walls and all.

For long term storage of pastas etc. ... I get rid of the box packaging (most often the source of the bug eggs) and vacuum pack them... then I store them in heavy plastic, or metal (popcorn tins.. Goodwill etc) containers. Flour items can be vacuum packed by using a tooth pick to poke 1 or 2 teeny holes in the package... this helps keep the "dust" from being drawn into your machine... remember items that contain fat will go rancid if stored too long as will nuts etc... these things can be stored in a freezer.

I have seen commercial "weevil" traps that you place in your pantry and storage areas to attract the weevil moths... You might want to use them until you are sure the infestation is over.

Address the problem now.... the longer you let it go... the harder they will be to eliminate.
