I saw two different snowball posts on Hometalk that used faux snow. One used a styrofoam ball digging out the middle for a votive, then applying faux snow that spreads like frosting. It’s beautiful!
The other is an ornament, covered with paper and Mod Podge topped with faux snowflakes. Beautiful also!
So I decided to combine the two and add my own twist.
First I took a 4 inch styrofoam ball and sliced off a small piece from the bottom so the snowball sits flat. I purchased a 3 pack from Amazon for $6.00, hence $2.00 for the cost of one.
Slice a piece off so it sits flat
Then I took a battery operated tea light and traced it on top of the snowball. Then cut out the pattern. Use the tea light itself to check your depth.
Trace tealite and cut out
I had little ornaments so I took one, placing it against the front of the snowball tracing it and cutting out the shape, using the ornament to check depth. I wanted it pretty level with the surface of the snowball. I decided to add a second ornament next to the first and followed the same directions.
Check your ornaments level
Now take approximately 5 squares of toilet paper. This is all you’ll need to cover a 4 inch ball. Tear them into little pieces.
Tear off 5 squares and tear in pieces
Cover the ball in modpodge and cover with the pieces of toilet paper. Insert into the spaces for the light and the ornaments. You need to cover all of the styrofoam or your faux flakes won’t stick.
Add modpodge to paper until covered
Once it’s all covered place another coat of modpodge before the next step. Tip: if you wear plastic gloves, the paper doesn’t stick as bad to your hands. Now get out your faux snow, the flake kind. I had a box I bought years ago from Pottery Barn. It gets used over and over! While the ball is still wet sprinkle flakes all over pressing down with your hand to secure the flakes to the paper.
Let completely dry.
I waited 24 hrs but it doesn’t take that long to dry. Once dry, glue in the 2 ornaments with E-6000. I also added a little ribbon to each ornament top. Turn on your tealight and insert on top.
All lit up
Place your snowball among your Christmas decorations and enjoy!
Enjoy!

If I just wanted to add glitter to the ball...would I use modpodge first...then glitter...then another coat of modpodge to keep glitter from coming off without making glitter dull? I've never used modpodge before.

They make real wax snowball candles in sweden. Google it and see if there are directions. I think they make a ball of white candle wax and quench it in water while it is still hot. Or they alternate putting in fire then water. makes realistic sowball look. This is off top of my head, so look it up. swedish snowball candle
