Although this is true in most instances, here is a very good tutorial that you really should read before starting this process.

You can do anything you wish. Whether it will last and be done correctly is another thing....

You could, but the surface probably won't be as smooth and long lasting without the prep work and sanding between coats.

i lightly sand before chalk painting to prep the wood. They say it isn't required but it's just what I do! Your cabinet will be gorgeous.

What Dena said. If you are not going to do chalk paint, then prep is very important. I have learned this the hard way, unfortunately. By the way.......love chalk paint. And Annie Sloan is the best, IMO. I have done a number of pieces, including both of our bathroom’s cabinets, as well as my grandson’s dresser. It‘s ease of application, and durability make it well worth the money.

I have the exact same dining set and it came out beautifully. Lightly sand it first, paint any way you like, then seal it. Mine is shabby chic cream chalk paint and I love it! Also, it wipes clean with a damp sponge. No more waxing or polishing! Made new cushion covers for the chairs too.
